Broadway is Back!

Alexandra Appleton | May 25, 2021

It was announced this week that Hadestown will reopen on Broadway on September 2, almost two weeks ahead of the first provisional Broadway reopening date of September 14. It is the earliest reopening date of any show thus far, and the producers have arranged this date in consultations with Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo and the Broadway League. Whether other productions will now reconsider their reopening dates remains unclear. But for now, we’re excited at all the daily announcements of shows returning to/opening on the Great White Way! Here’s some of the shows that are top of our list!

Jagged Little Pill

Nominated for 15 Tony Awards (the most of any show of the 2019–2020 season) and winner of the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album, Jagged Little Pill will reopen at the Broadhurst Theatre from October 21.

Caroline, or Change

The Broadway revival of Tony Kushner and Jeanine Tesori’s Caroline, or Change will now open at Studio 54 this fall with Sharon D. Clarke in the lead role. Previews begin on October 7, ahead of an opening night on October 27.

Diana: The Musical

Diana: The Musical closed during its previews in March 2020 but they will now resume at the Longacre Theatre from November 2, before opening on November 17. Diana: The Musical has also been filmed and is due for release on Netflix this fall.

Six

The hotly anticipated Broadway production of Six will finally open at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre, after its opening night was suspended the night Broadway theatres shut in 2020. Previews begin on September 17, ahead of an opening night on October 3.

Come From Away

Come From Away is scheduled to reopen at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre from September 21. And don’t forget that the musical was recently filmed live on stage and is due to be distributed by Apple Original Films.

The Music Man

The Broadway revival of The Music Man, starring Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster, will begin previews at the Winter Garden Theatre on December 20, before opening on February 10, 2022. Before that, Sutton Foster will be crossing the pond this summer to star in the West End revival of Anything Goes, alongside Robert Lindsay.

Moulin Rouge: The Musical

The Moulin Rouge will reopen for business at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre on September 24. All of the original principal cast are due to return, aside from Karen Olivo who announced her departure from the show in April.

Mrs. Doubtfire

Another show to be suspended during its previews, Mrs. Doubtfire will reopen at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre, starring Rob McClure. Previews begin on October 21, before opening night on December 5.

And that’s a wrap! What show are you most looking forward to seeing return? Broadway, we have missed you!
